Purpose:

The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for managing the unit and ensuring a high standard of patient care is delivered by both themselves and the nursing staff. They are responsible for overseeing all aspects of operation of nursing care and report to the Director of Nursing

Key Responsibilities:

● Manage and participate in the delivery of clinical care based on best practices and nursing standards which ensures both patient and staff safety and is in keeping with the Philosophy and Mission Statement of the Organisation;

● Take care of the medico/psychosocial/spiritual needs of the patients and their carers/relatives;

● Foster an environment that values collegiality and continuous education in order to provide a patient centred approach to clinical practice;

● Demonstrate a participative management style with effective leadership skills including high level communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation ability

● Supervise student nurses, enrolled nurses and less experienced Registered Nurses

● Provide weekly reporting of unit activity to the DON and CEO discussing any issues that have arisen;

● Liaise with the administrative staff regarding patient scheduling giving consideration to staffing levels and skill mix;

● Delegate activity of Registered Nurses giving consideration to patient allocation, competence and scope of practice;

● Monitor quality checklists within MOSAIQ and ensure action taken and assigned tasks completed in a timely manner

● Reporting of all adverse drug reactions to the TGA;

● Ensure any incident reports, risks and improvement opportunities are added onto Logiqc, assigned and completed appropriately;

● Monitor and work with the Quality Team to ensure all nursing competencies/training are up to date and help facilitate nursing staff to achieve compliance

● Carry out monthly auditing of the Medication Administration record to ensure completeness;

● Carry out stock control including imprest medication and stores to ensure adequate supplies at all times

● Carry out the administration of systemic treatment in accordance with best practice and Cancer Institute or Clinical Trial guidelines

● Ensure cleanliness of unit and effective waste management procedures;

● Handle and manage Cytotoxic Spills and other hazardous substances;

● Support and participate in Quality Improvement and Accreditation systems; demonstrate a high level of knowledge and understanding of the NSQHS and work with the DON and Quality Team to ensure ongoing compliance with the National Standards

● Attend and Participate in meetings as required including the Quality Assurance Committee and Medical Advisory Committee meetings

● Carry out annual nursing staff appraisals, including setting realistic goals and performance management when required

● Facilitate communication between the nursing team including daily handover/ huddles and monthly nurses’ meetings

● Any other duties deemed necessary by DON.

About the role:

  • Located in Wagga Wagga
  • Monday-Friday, no weekends or on-call.
  • Normal clinic hours are 0900-1700
  • Permanent Full-time
  • Working closely with Medical Oncologists, Pharmacists, and other Allied Health Practitioners.
  • Overseeing and managing a busy Day Oncology Clinical and reportable to the Director of Nursing

Experience & Qualifications

● Current registration with the NSW Nurses Registration Board;

● 5 years post graduate experience as a Registered Nurse;

● Chemotherapy Nursing Practice Package (NSW College of Nursing) or willingness to undertake;

● Graduate Certificate Oncology (NSW College of Nursing) or willingness to undertake;

● Competency in intravenous cannulation and care of Venous Accessing Devices;

● Sound knowledge of Mosaiq software;

● Patients and colleagues must always be treated inclusively with respect and warmth. The Privacy Act 1988 must be followed at all times.
